Dunsborough is at the head of the Margaret River region on that little tip of land below Perth, projecting into the Indian Ocean. “It’s booming down here, absolutely flying,” says Nick Goode. His company specialises in high end residential design and construction, but also carries out some commercial projects.

His new home may be a showpiece of design, materials and building methods, but it is purely a family residence, he emphasises, “except for my little fun workshop at the ground level, my play pen,” he says laughing. That’s where he develops such devices as a plasma television lift utilising dentist’s chair motors, and the three story dumb waiter installed in this house and made from a rack-and-pinion electric gate mechanism.
