It’s not often that a building owner enthuses about a brickwork detail but Bruce Curtis, the CEO of Bethany Christian Care, describes the recessed course banding the brickwork at The Plains as “rather nice, quite schmick actually!”

Bruce is justly proud of the latest stage of his project which he claims is “one of the most state-ofthe- art facilities in the country.” Stage 3 involved construction of a 104-bed aged care facility, 24 serviced apartments, community hall and administration areas.

Pino Gentile, Thomson Adsett’s team leader for this project, describes the external design as “an exercise in form and massing and breaking it up into a campus of buildings that are linked in various ways.” Brick creates a common theme, reinforcing that link.

Brickwork’s familiar residential associations also help to create a more homely feel, a comfort for new residents undergoing the emotional and physical disruption of moving out of their own home.

However brick was ultimately chosen for its affordability and low maintenance requirements. “We didn’t consider other materials because of their maintenance issues,” says Bruce Curtis. Pino Gentile supports this: “What has gone up is effectively how it is going to look in 20 years.”
