Terracade XP terracotta facade panels in Torrens

Terraçade XP in Torrens decorates both ends of the three-storey penthouse block. The imposing Art Deco red brick woolstore, close to the Brisbane CBD and adjacent to the Brisbane River, has now entered its third life.

MARCH 2007

The grandly named Queensland Primary Producers Co-operative Association No. 4 Woolstore has now entered its third role since construction commenced in the 1930s. The imposingly handsome,

Art Deco, red brick building was converted to offices and car storage in the 1970s. Its prime position, overlooking the Brisbane River and just four kilometres from the CBD, made the

Woolstore ideal for residential development. The massive cavity brickwork envelope was retained, as was about one-third of the existing internal structure. The balance was gutted and a new building inserted into the old fabric.

Rising three storeys above the existing parapet level, the new structure is capped with eight large penthouses that have views east to the river and west back to the city.

The architects, Donovan Hill, chose Austral Bricks innovative Terraçade XP terracotta facade panels as a decorative element to both ends of the penthouse block. They were attracted by the security of Terraçade’s mechanical fixing (using conventional masonry anchors) to the underlying concrete structure.

“The Terraçade colour range was also suitable for the colour scheme we selected,” Donovan Hill’s spokesman comments. “The dark brown colour [Torrens] tied in with the paint scheme for the banding on the existing building.”
