In Practice 05

For Roger Byass, walking into the Colourbrick launch at the Adelaide Sailing Club was a Eureka moment. “As soon as I saw Colourbrick I thought, ah great! I don’t usually come away excited from most of these promotional events, but this was different.”

Roger Byass, co-founder and director of Beechwood Homes, likes the look of render “but I don’t necessarily like rendering all the house, because of the ongoing maintenance.” Colourbrick allowed Beechwood Homes to give its Concept display home the smooth texture and even coloration of render, without the ongoing issues.

“I saw the colour range, and thought this is made for our display home. And it fitted with our contemporary style. I thought Colourbrick would go Number One and it turned out really well.”

Exclusive to Austral Bricks, the Colourbrick system comprises a special brick and a unique tinting emulsion (not a paint). The emulsion penetrates the pore structure of the bricks and mortar. The permanent colour is guaranteed to withstand Australia’s climatic extremes.

Beechwood specialises in building split level homes on sloping blocks. The Concept is located at Blackwood Park, in the foothills south of the Adelaide CBD on a corner block with a complex slope. Its five levels follow the contours, allowing the geometric facade to address the street on grade.

The composite facade design blends cedar, render and Colourbrick finished in Bayside, a soft caramel colour. The brickwork was laid by Beechwood’s team and the tinting system was applied on site by Austral Bricks.

“Like all new systems, there were some teething problems,” Roger Byass admits. “But in the end I couldn’t speak highly enough of (the Colourbrick stain applicators). They gave me exactly what I wanted, and the finish was excellent.”

Colourbrick is on the shortlist for Beechwood’s next display home. “I would certainly use it again and recommend it,” says Roger Byass. “If anyone comes to our display home and says that’s the finish we want, I’d back that up 100 percent. I’d say Colourbrick is a great way of doing it!”
